Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world (second to Saffron), because it produces few pods and is notoriously temperamental. The Vanilla plant originated in modern-day Mexico, where the Aztecs used it as a fertility tonic. Today Vanilla is still considered powerful aphrodisiac, which makes it one of the most recognized perfume ingredients to date.
